PARKS, RECREATION & OPEN SPACE NEWS IN:
SNOWBUSTERS SERVICE & VOLUNTEERS
Do you like to shovel snow and help in your
community? Louisville Senior Services is in need of
volunteers to help keep seniors in Louisville safe in
their homes by providing snow shoveling. To be a
snow buster, you will need to complete a volunteer
application. Interested? Contact KatieTofte by
email at KTofte@LouisvilleCO.gov.
BE SAFE AND KEEP OFF THE ICE!
There are numerous creeks and seven ponds on Coal
Creek, many of them 20 feet deep. It might be
tempting to walk or play on the frozen water, but the
ice can easily break. You should NEVER venture onto
frozen water. Louisville Police will be called and if the
violators are caught and, if under 18, their parents will
receive a summons. Additionally, for your safety we do
not allow non -golfers on the course at any time. This
includes cross-country skiing, show shoeing, walking,
running, cycling, dogs off leash and/or playing on the
fairways. Please choose one of the multitude of open
space trails within the City for these activities.
Sign up to receive monthly email
newsletters from the Louisville
Recreation & Senior Center.
• Membership & Pass Information
• Monthly Fitness Schedules
• Upcoming Programs
• Senior Resources
• Facility Hours
There is something for
everybody at the Louisville
Recreation & Senior Center.
ILZ Cityof
Louisville
Recreation & Senior Center
www.LouisvilleRecreation.com 1303-666-7400
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A RANGER NATURALIST
A day in the life of Benjamin White-Patarino, one of the
City's two Ranger Naturalists.
As a Ranger Naturalist for the City of Louisville there
isn't really a typical day, but I usually start at the
City Services building where I get my uniform and
gear ready before heading out. I make sure to read
the end -of -watch reports from the Louisville Police
Department to see if they have reported any new
issues on parks or open space.
The City's Ranger Naturalists work closely with the
Police Department to coordinate safety and
enforcement on and off our public lands.
With more than 3,000 acres of open space and parks
in Louisville, there's certainly plenty to keep me busy
and lots of opportunities to interact with Louisville's
residents and visitors. Patrolling takes me all over
Louisville. I use my patrols to provide impromptu edu-
cational opportunities with walkers and cyclists and
enforce the rules of our open space and parks when
necessary. I walk 5-6 miles a day on average, which is
a pretty great way to see Louisville's open space and
parks.
In order to protect all of the natural beauty in our city,
it's important that all residents and visitors feel
welcome, but also understand that the rules and
etiquette protect the flora, fauna, and wildlife in our
open space and parks.
Following the rules is about showing respect to both
our natural environment and everyone else enjoying
the outdoors. I would urge everyone to familiarize
themselves with trail etiquette, and to remember to
bring a facial covering in accordance with the City
Ordinance for areas where you can't maintain 6 feet of
distance. Visit LouisvilleCO.gov/OpenSpace for details.
OPEN SPACE WINTER PROGRAMS
Registration is required for all programming. Please
RSVP at: bit.ly/LouisvilleOpenSpaceEducationEvents
or call 303.335.4742. Participants will be required to
maintain a 6-foot distance with anyone not in their
household and wear a cloth face covering when social
distancing cannot be maintained (per Louisville City
Ordinance). Please stay home if you are sick.
Walk with a Ranger Naturalist (all ages)
When: Sunday, December 6, from 9 AM - 10 AM
Where: Harper Lake to Lake Park (meet at Harper Lake
trailhead, Washington Ave.)
Join the City of Louisville's Ranger Naturalists for an
informal stroll from Harper Lake to Lake Park as we
discuss the importance of land corridors to wildlife!
Page 8 • Winter 2020/21
