Recreation Advisory Board
Minutes
November 25, 2024
Board Updates
Outdoor Rec Amenities Update
Gene Kutscher reported that a lot happened at the November 12 meeting of
the Outdoor Rec Subcommittee.
• Several members of the public attended the meeting. They expressed
concern about the state of the bocce courts in the City. The courts
become unplayable if they are not maintained. The City parks have
seven or eight bocce courts, in Memory Square Park, Community Park,
and Pallino Park. Gene affirmed the importance of maintaining City
assets, and said that it's cheaper to maintain them rather than to rebuild
them. He clarified that this is a Parks budget item.
• Gene provided an update on pickleball and tennis courts in Boulder.
Boulder has lost several dozen tennis courts with the closure of Rocky
Mountain Tennis Center and the imminent closure of the CU South
Tennis Complex. The current plan is to convert some tennis courts to
pickleball, after constructing new tennis courts to replace the lost courts.
Boulder reached an agreement with CU to build four to six indoor courts.
• Gene reported that Louisville has been proactive about maintaining our
tennis courts. He said that it would be beneficial if the City would fund at
least one additional court at Centennial Park, which would allow league
play to have an entire match at one site. Centennial Valley Tennis
Association (CVTA) members may reach out to City Council to advocate
for this.
• The subcommittee members from the Parks and Public Landscaping
Advisory Board will be changing.
• Lafayette has not fulfilled its part of the IGA related to the land between
Louisville and Lafayette. Louisville built the ball fields as part of the IGA,
but Lafayette has yet to build soccer or multipurpose fields.
• Kathy said that Abby McNeal is aware of the bocce court maintenance
issue. Some of the infill mixture approved by City Council will to go the
bocce courts.
Board Feedback
Lisa passed out a tentative Board Calendar and asked for questions or
changes.
Lisa asked for questions to pose to the Finance Director at the January
meeting. These questions could pertain to various projects, but the Advisory
Board is particularly interested in how to fund a new golf clubhouse. The
clubhouse is inadequate, in need of repair, and doesn't meet the
sustainability goals of the City. Consultants who studied the building wrote
that the most reasonable decision is to rebuild it.
