Recreation Advisory Board
Minutes
January 27, 2025
Handout of Fitness Survey Results. Hired two new staff members. Survey
feedback was positive. Survey identified more hours needed on Saturday.
Would like Sunday hours. Waiting line for some equipment. Priorities for
new equipment purchases and staffing including trainers. Equipment
upgrades will cost up to $29,000. From 2023 to 2024 saw an increase of
10,000 participants for fitness classes. 369 surveys turned in, a big
increase from last year. Assessing budget feasibility to meet these
increasing demands. Zoom classes use tablets and there are some sound
issues for remote participants. New technology will be installed in August
2025 to address these issues. Working to get a quote for installation
during LRC closure week. Lisa: There are some issues with folks following
rules during peak time. Can staff monitor usage at these times (e.g., 7 am
and 5 pm)?
• Recreation and Senior Center Updates — Kathy
January revenue and attendance increased from a year ago. Up about
350 visitors. Summer day camp increased revenue to $215,000, up from
last year. GLO party last Saturday night was sold out, 250 families.
Seniors ice castle tour in Cripple Creek. Universal preschool registration
with classes already full. Youth basketball and indoor soccer participation
on Saturdays has increased to full capacity. May need to request
increased funding to meet the demand. For the past 13 years, we have
been pursuing an IGA with BVSD to increase capacity and avoid
exchanging payments between District and City. Dan: can we expand
hours for the preschool programs from part to full day program? Kathy: we
could but would need to seek a different license, provide food, etc. Dick:
can we further increase fees for nonresidents to manage high usage
rates?
• Inline Hockey Rink- Pickleball court project repurposing update —
Kathy
CIP budgeted for this year to fund conversion of rink. RFP will be out this
week to contractors for bids due April 1. Past bids have shown to not be
adequate to complete CIPs. Therefore, we will ask for line -item bids to
help ensure completion this fall and within budget. Five courts would align
with pickleball standards and would include noise mitigation (visual
handout). Michele: can we ask for bids on wind screens? Kathy: we may
need to customize these. Dasher boards could be left in place. Five courts
would allow for benches between courts and meet national standards.
Public comments: David Cohen who resides near these planned courts
asked whether noise from play may be an issue? Kathy: play has occurred
for the last 2.5 years and is comparable to conversation level noise level.
Mary Janda plays and supports noise mitigation as well. Could sound
