Open Space Advisory Board
Minutes
February 12, 2025
o Long Range Planning assessment team will submit the proposed contract to City
Council during March 4th City Council meeting for review and approval. It includes
ensuring a qualified open space consultant is part of the Long Range Plan. It will
lay the foundation for many of the open space activities.
o Denver Gazette ran a story of best places to live and the City of Louisville
finished first. Accessibility to parks, greenways and open spaces were big draw.
Everyone is within -10 minute walk to these spaces.
7. 7:10 pm Board Updates (5 Minutes)
• Discuss Possibility of Canceling April OSAB Meeting Due to Meeting with City
Council
• Group agrees that there are too many meetings over the next two months (i.e. 2 OSAB
meetings in March, City Council meeting to discuss comprehensive plan in March and
April)
o Motion to cancel April meeting: unanimously approved.
• Brad will now record minutes in May since April meeting cancelled.
8. 7:15 pm Public Comments on Items Not on the Agenda (5 minutes, more time as
needed)
• none
9. 7:20 pm Discussion Item: Hecla Lake & Bird Habitat, Ted Floyd, Author and Birder
(20 Minutes)
• Ted Floyd, author of birder led discussion on Hecla Lake history. He lives in Lafayette.
o It is an e-bird hotspot. It attracts lots of birders as it is a birdwatcher destination.
o Birdwatch walk every 1st Sunday at -1 pm, open to public
o Why such a birding hotspot? It is well protected and has crayfish that attract ducks,
migration birds and many bird species, including egrets during warmer months. The
lake has good surrounding vegetation which acts as protection barrier. And, no motor
boats are allowed.
o Susan: Would it be appropriate to have water rights for the Lake? There seems to be
water coming in then goes out for agriculture use. Ted: not an urgent issue. Water
levels vary during the year.
o Ted suggests no further lake development and proposes methods to continue to
preserve the Lake - i.e. don't do anything with the vegetation - no trimming or
removal.
o Hecla lake is always good for renovation of the mind.
o Keep Hecla intact! Encourage people to use it!
City of Louisville
Parks Division 749 Main Street Louisville CO 80027
303.335.4774 (phone) www.LouisvilleCO.gov
4
