PureLine
1.0 C102 Introduction
Chlorine dioxide (C102) is a powerful oxidizing, bleaching and disinfecting agent. Originally discovered in
1811 by Sir Humphrey Davis, chlorine dioxide did not really come into commercial use until the mid-
1940's, mainly to supplement chlorine in wood pulp bleaching, water disinfection, and some specialty
bleaching processes.
The sudden increase in C102 use in the mid-1980's prompted investigation into other applications and
uses. It was discovered (or reconfirmed) that:
• C102 is a powerful oxidizer with 2.5 times the oxidizing power of chlorine, hydrogen peroxide and
sodium hypochlorite.
• C102 is very effective at breaking down inorganic sulfur and nitrogen -based compounds, in
particular hydrogen sulfide (H2S), iron sulfide (FeS), nitrates (NO2-), nitrites (NO3-), and nitrogen
oxides (NOX).
• C102 is specific in its action with the ability to break down unsaturated hydrocarbons, aldehydes,
mercaptans, disulfides, and certain polymer gels without destroying saturated hydrocarbons or
carboxyl acids.
• C102 acts as a free radical (like hydrogen peroxide) making it both very reactive and very fast
reacting.
• C102 is a very powerful biocide that attacks and kills microorganisms on a cellular level.
What Is Chlorine Dioxide Used For
Chlorine dioxide is environmentally friendly. In fact, chlorine dioxide technology protects the
environment and human health from bacteria and by-products formed by other disinfection methods.
For example, in the pulp and paper industry, the use of C102 has virtually eliminated dioxin in mill
wastewater and has led to significant improvements in surrounding ecosystems. As a result, the Federal
government is phasing out the use of chlorine in pulp mills over the next few years.
Advantages
PureLine exclusive patented C102 technology offers many benefits:
• Environmentally Friendly
• EPA/RMP & OSHA PSM Compliance
• Efficacy Over Broad pH Range
• Requires a shorter contact time (approx. 7-10 min.)
• Iron & Manganese Reduction
• Taste & Odor Control
• Turbidity and Color removal
• TOC Reduction
• CT Credit (EPA gives CT of 0.25 ppm@ 20 secs= 99.99% pathogens kill)
• Low Capital & Operating Costs
• Dependable operation
• Low maintenance
PureLine Treatment Systems • 1241 N.
