Library Board of Trustees
Minutes
January 13, 2011

The discussion that followed focused on these three areas:
1.Type of book drop and its cost

2.Location of book drop

3.Collection and delivery of materials

1)Type of Book Drop and Its Cost

a.There is no way to know how many items would be returned to the standalone

book drop. It is also reasonable to presume that items from other libraries and
other than Superior residents would be returned to this book drop. For
purposes of the discussion, a 50% return of Superior items to the standalone
–
book drop was used. This would mean approximately 180220 items per day,
with the highest returns during the two months of the Summer Reading
program.
b.A book drop needs to be large enough to accommodate this number of items

so that none are left outside the book drop, as often happens when this type
of book drop is full. Security of Library materials is critical as this has
financial implications to the Library and individual users.
c.A book drop needs to be sturdy and secure and should contain a spring-loaded

interior that adjusts as the weight of materials increases/deceases.
–
d.The cost of this type of book drop ranges from approximately $2500$5000,

largely depending on size and whether it is placed indoors or outdoors, and
costs to anchor it.
2)Location of Book Drop

a.No location has been selected and several were discussed, including Whole

Foods or Safeway. Ultimately the discussion focused on locating the book drop
at the Superior Town Hall.
b.It is possible to locate the book drop inside or outside Town Hall.

c.If the book drop is to be accessed from the exterior of the building, fire and

other security issues (bomb-proofing) need to be addressed.
d.The location of the drop may also dictate the hours available for use by the

public, as well as collection and delivery of materials back to the Library.
3)Collection and Delivery of Materials

a.Based on a 50% return of Superior items to the book drop, the items would

require 6-7 rigid plastic totes; each weighing approximately 30-40 pounds
when full.
b.Collection and delivery of Library materials will require some training and a

daily time commitment not suitable to volunteer efforts. Louisville Library
staff cannot accommodate this additional service as part of daily
responsibility for a variety of reasons, among which are the costs, physical
demands, and transportation requirements.
c.Sandy proposed that there could be Town of Superior (Town) staff, perhaps in

Public Works, who would handle this job.
City of Louisville
::
Public Library :: 951 Spruce StreetLouisville, CO 80027
303-335-4815 :: 303-335-4833 (fax) :: www.louisville-library.gov
