COUNCIL COMMUNICATION <br />TO: <br />FROM: <br />MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL <br />MALCOLM FLEMING <br />CITY MANAGER <br />DATE: MARCH 14, 2011 <br />SUBJECT: SALES TAX REPORT FOR THE MONTH ENDED JANUARY 31, 2011 <br />ORIGINATING <br />DEPARTMENT: CITY MANAGER'S OFFICE <br />SUMMARY: <br />Attached are the revenue reports for sales tax, lodging tax, auto use, building use tax <br />and consumer use tax for the month ending January 31, 2011. <br />City sales tax revenue for January 2011 ended down 2.7% from 2010 and 5.9% below <br />budget estimates. <br />The top 50 vendors for 2011 ended the month of January up 9.11% from January 2010. <br />The only decline for the month was for Home Improvement (- 14.52 %). Gains were seen <br />for all other categories with General Merchandise up (5.61 %), Grocery up (9 %), Hotels up <br />(24.7 %), Restaurants up (8.45 %), Technology up (6 %) and Telecom /Utilities up (25.29 %). <br />The increase in the Telecom /Utilities sector is due to the timing of billings for Public <br />Service. <br />Lodging tax revenue increased 25% compared to January 2010 and is 11% above budget <br />for the month. <br />Auto use tax for January 2011 ended down 2% from January 2010 and is approximately <br />2% below budget. <br />Building use tax for January 2011 increased 476% as compared to January 2010 and is <br />3.8% below budget for the year. <br />Consumer use tax for the month of January 2011 was $11,262.00. <br />(35) new sales tax licenses were processed in January for out -of -city vendors. <br />is SUBJECT JANUARY 2011 SALES TAX REPORT AGENDA ITEM <br />
