Purpose. <br />The intent of this chapter shall be to define the types of signs which will be <br />permitted in the various zoning districts and those which will be prohibited, the <br />manner in which sign areas and dimensions will be measured, and exempting <br />certain types of signs from this chapter. It is further the intent of this chapter to <br />encourage the erection of signs which are attractive and compatible with the <br />adjacent property~ which will preserve and enhance property values within the <br />community, which will provide for the public convenience, health and welfare, <br />and which will protect the public safety. <br />Sec. 17.24.020. Definitions. <br />The following words, terms and phrases when used in this chapter shall have <br />the meanings ascribed to them in this section, except where the context clearly <br />indicates a different meaning: <br />Accessory means subordinate or incidental to, and on the same lot or on a <br />contiguous lot in the same ownership and zone as the building or use being <br />identified or advertised. <br />Architectural projection means any projection which is not intended for <br />occupancy and which extends beyond the face of an exterior wall of a building, <br />including arcades, roof overhangs, mansards, unenclosed exterior balconies, <br />marquees, canopies, pilasters, fascias and the like, but not including signs. <br />Awning means a movable shelter supported entirely from the exterior wall of a <br />building and of a type which can be retracted, folded or collapsed against the face <br />of the supporting building. <br />2 <br />
