PAGE TWO
SUBJECT: UPDATE DISCUSSION- YOUTH ADVISORY BOARD
DATE: APRIL 12, 2011
DECEMBER:
December 2, 2010- The YAB meeting was visited by Gavin McMillan from the
Louisville Planning Department who discussed a proposed future plan to change
downtown hang outs and make them more inviting. Also discussed at this meeting
was a plan to create a volunteer handbook for youth seeking volunteer opportunities in
the community.
rd
Members decided to march in the Louisville Parade of Lights on December 3 to
advertise the YAB and be seen by a wide variety of people.
December 9, 2010- YAB members helped with the Louisville Recreation Center’s
Dessert and Story with Santa event at the Rec. Center.
JANUARY:
January 6, 2011- Lynn Wooten, American Cancer Society, attended the YAB meeting
and asked for help selling flowers for Daffodil Days, a fund raiser for the American
Cancer Society. We were also visited by Jeff Miller from the Leading Now Project, who
was there to observe. He is starting a project to look at youth participation in the
decision making process in communities.
January 17, 2011- YAB members met at the Recreation & Senior Center to take orders
for the American Cancer Society’s fundraiser “Daffodil Days.” They also decorated
bags for the Meals on Wheels program and sold home-baked goods.
FEBRUARY:
February 4, 2011- After discovering the Boulder County Volunteer Connection
organization and their website (http://www.volunteerconnection.net/) the group decided
that what we were looking to create (a volunteer handbook) already exists. They would
like to add it as a link on the YAB website.
February 10, 2011- Sold daffodil orders and baked goods at Medtronics in Louisville.
February 12, 2011- YAB members assisted with the Louisville Recreation Center’s
Royal Ball, an event held at the Louisville Center for the Arts.
February 17, 2011- YAB Members helped with the Annual Heat Relief Dinner at the
Recreation Center.
MARCH:
March 3, 2011- Kellie Gorman from the Keep It Clean partnership visited our meeting
and spoke about her group’s efforts to educate about water quality, storm drainage,
non-point-source pollution- all different kinds of pollution that can’t be pinpointed to a
specific source but effects. Keep It Clean gets a very important message into the
world, the importance of pollution and how dangerous it is. She proposed a spring
clean project where the YAB would work alongside a Girl Scout Troop (or two) to clean
up along a local creek.
March 17, 2011- Members volunteered at the St. Patrick’s Day dinner for seniors at the
Recreation & Senior Center
