Horticulture & Forestry
Advisory Board
Minutes
Thursday, May 5, 2011
Library Meeting Room
951 Spruce Street
7:00
PM
Call to Order—Chair Mike Frontczak called the meeting to order at 7:05 pm.
I.
Roll Call—Board members present: Shelly Alm, Mike Frontczak, Kimberly
II.
Heestand, Meredith Preston-Eddy, Theresa Rounds, Matt Tepe, Ellen Toon. Staff
members present: Dean Johnson and Joe Stevens.
Approval of Agenda—The agenda was approved by all members.
III.
Approval of Minutes—The minutes from the April 7, 2011 meeting were approved.
IV.
Public Comments on Items Not on the Agenda—No public present. Board and
V.
staff comments follow: 1) Matt: Xeriscape demonstration gardens in the Arboretum are
choked with grass and dandelions. According to Dean, last year $2500 was spent on
maintenance of the two beds; this year’s reduced budget may only cover spring and fall
cleanups. 2) Mike: Heritage Park landscape improvements are almost complete, and
everything looks very good. 3) Dean: Dandelion spraying will take place the week of
May 23. The budget for weed control has been doubled since last year. Contractors
hired by the City are licensed for pesticide application; city employees who apply
pesticides are not required to be licensed. 4) Matt: Puncture vine is a serious problem
on the ball field at Fireside Elementary, and the adjacent bike path. According to Dean
and Joe, the City cannot do weed control on school district property. Suggestion was
made to contact the school’s PTA, the baseball coaches and parents who use the field,
and the school district through a letter to the editor of local newspapers.
Update on Takoda/Steel Ranch development—Final construction drawings are
VI.
nearing completion. Dean will advise HFAB when plans are available for review and
comment.
Study Session with City Council,Tuesday, May 24
(time tba)—HFAB will have
VII.
half an hour to present to Council. Theresa and Mike will produce an outline of topics to
be covered, and work with Dean and Nimira to produce a powerpoint presentation.
City of Louisville
Parks & Recreation Department
749 Main Street Louisville CO 80027
303.335.4735 (phone) 303.335.4738 (fax) www.louisvilleco.gov
