Horticultural & Forestry Advisory Board
Minutes
March 2, 2007
allergies in urban populations because of the rise of pollens in the air. Jim
talked about new and upcoming trees for the urban environment, new varieties
of Elm, Columnar HackbEmy, Royal Range Drop Crab, and upright conifers to
name a few. Jim talked about how Schmidt Nursery works with growers to
develop new cultivars and has many trial sites throughout the country. They
are also working on dwarf varieties of standard trees that will work in tight
urban settings. There was some discussion about species distribution within
an urban setting. Municipalities do not to have more than 10%-20% of any
given species in their invE~ntory or risk vulnerability to disease or insect
damage. The trend in urban tree planting is to start out with initial larger tree
sizes that are limbed up '1/3 of tree with 2/3 of head, with emphasis on more
columnar varieties. Jim mentioned shadetrees.com and sunshinenursery.com
as a resource site about trees. HFAB mentioned the possibility of having Jim
back for a formal presentation to the board and also for a public event to which
Jim was agreeable. A thl3 end of this discussion Tim asked for an update
concerning the City's landscape maintenance contract, Chris reported that
bids have been evaluated and now must be approved by City Council in the
near future.
6. Arbor Day/Seven in Seven Tree Planting - Chris gave a presentation of
potential sites in Louisville for new tree planting for the Arbor Day/Seven in
Seven Tree planting event to be held the week of April 21-28. Potential sites
would include Enclave Park, intersection of Via Appia and McCaslin Blvd, Via
Appia and Pine St., Policl3 Station, McKinley Park, Centennial, Park, Athletic
Complex and Memory Square. Planting at Memory Square would be to
replace the aging Elms. IPlantings at Centennial would replace aging crabs.
Chris is talking to suppliers as to availability of trees. 1 inch container stock
tree size was discussed as maybe the most practical for volunteers to plant.
Chris suggested that HFAB members locate other potential sites. The
discussed goal for Louisville is 100 trees. Chris is making up a plant list and
assigns HFAB members sites to flag locations. Chris will try to do this before
next meeting 4/5/07. Chris will advertise in the City newsletter, Louisville
Times, and maybe the Daily Camera for the event and volunteers. The Arbor
Day/Seven in Seven is to be continued on next month's agenda with an
additional special meetin~~ to be scheduled sometime before 4/21/07 to finalize
the planting events.
7. Arboretum - Chris reported that Sam (City Attorney) is working on the
501 (c) 3 Non-profit for tho Arboretum. Need to keep on agenda. Thanks were
made to Susan for writin~1 the letter of appreciation to CSU regarding design
projects for the Arbo and Historic Museum. Chris reported street signs are
being made for Arboretum.
8. City Website - Update. Chris reported that there was more info on the
City's website concerningl HFAB but asked for help from HFAB members for
additional info. Need to keep on agenda.
