Horticultural & Forestry Advisory Board
Minutes
November 3, 2005
VI. Landscape Contract Specifications-Update
In a conversation with Scott regarding his concerns about micromanaging
contractors' decisions, Theresa emphasized that the Board's comments and
suggestions are not meant to micromanage, but to foster improvement.
Before the contract goes out to bid in February, Scott would like to continue
the discussion; and HFAIB would like to review the final draft.
VII. Arboretum
Regarding establishment of 501 (c) (3) non-profit, Theresa reiterated that
Mayor Sisk does not want to combine 501 c's for the Arboretum and Open
Space Board.
Chris is still working on street and entrance signage for the Arboretum.
In the past, Susan has written a letter to CSU regarding senior class design
projects. She has offered to draft a new letter of appreciation to CSU's school
president, Penley, the DE~an of Agricultural Sciences, Courtney Lockwood,
Elizabeth Heldmann, and others in related positions, to be signed by Mayor
Sisk and the Chair of HFAB
VIII. HFAB meeting scheldule
Discussion of possible bimonthly or quarterly meeting schedule instead of
monthly meetings. Final decision by all board members present is to continue
for 2007 the current schedule of monthly meetings on the first Thursday of the
month at 6:30 pm.
IX. Development of HFAB"s website and other public education projects
Chris will check on possible installation of a hit counter to track public use of
the site.
Fred suggested inviting a Library board member to a future HFAB meeting to
discuss the possible establishment of a special gardening section on library
shelves.
Susan suggested bringing in speakers for a City-sponsored free lecture series
about gardening and environmental issues. Funds for the Arboretum non-
profit could be raised from community donors and corporate sponsors of the
series. By raising awarHness of the Arboretum, the lectures may also
provide a volunteer base for occasional Arboretum and other related cleanup
and maintenance projects.
X. Arboretum Tree I.D. and Xeric Demonstration Garden Plant I.D.
Brochure - No update from Tim. Chris suggested posting current information
on the website until the Board is able to produce a printed brochure.
XI. The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 pm.
