City Council
Study Session Summary
June 14, 2011
Page 4of 5
Director Barrett would like to see the museum opened during Friday nights while
the Street Faireoccurs.
th
Mayor Sisk asked staff to present options on June 28.
Wayne Lee and Maggie Snyder profiled their upcoming book about Louisville.
Research for their book was done at the Louisville Museum.
An audience member suggested using Historic Preservation tax fund to support
the museum, however, it was noted that this would require a change to the
ordinanceand voter approval.
Mayor thanked the members for their services and dedication to the community
and thanked Brian for presenting their case.
Update/Discussion –Museum Hours of Operation
Beth Barrett, Library and Museum Director, presented a table showing 4 options
for making the museum more accessible to the public showing current levels of
service, and other options for increasing museum hours and staff hours. Staff is
struggling on how toprovide adequate support with the current levels of service.
Director Barrett hopes that in bringing thisproposal to Council shecanbegin the
process of requesting additional funding for 2012.
Council Member Muckle agreed that there has not been adequate support for the
museum. Fire system improvements werea good step, but more space is
needed and professional personnel. Muckle clarified the Historic Preservation
tax was passed to support preservation of structures and money is given for land
marking. Muckle is open to discussion, but not immediately interested in the
Historic Fund being used to support museumoperations.
Mayor Sisk said staffing issues at the museum are within the City Manager’s
prowess. He agrees the museum should be open longer hours. Asks the
question, how is that accomplished and what are the trade-offs?Mayor is not
anticipating additional revenues. The Mayor requested the 2012 budget process
put a cost to the increase in hours of operation for the museum and thus
increasedstaff hours. He noted, with anincrease in programming/staffing
something else in the budget will need to be reduced.
Library Director Barrett appreciated the opportunity to draw attention to this issue
and believes if the museum is opened more hours that is a good first step.
