Historic Preservation Commission
Meeting Minutes
May 16, 2011

Fasick mentioned it is on the National Register and would qualify for state funding if
needed.
Update/Discussion/Action – Energy Sustainability
Andy Johnson, member of the Louisville Sustainability Advisory Board, spoke to the
HPC regarding energy sustainability. He discussed the following:

There are tax benefits for certain energy sustainability projects

Residential projects have a lot of tax benefits

Lighting incentives for commercial projects are really good

Energy smart rebates are also available
Tofte asked if this discussion falls under preservation.
Stewart stated there is some crossover. He added lighting isn’t the best example but
windows would be a great example of energy sustainability and preservation.
Speier asked if the energy smart program provided cost estimates.
McCartney recommended the HPC should create a case study. Choose an historic
commercial building and determine all of the ways they can benefit from energy
sustainability benefits.
Fasick asked if the City Buildings have gone through this. Maybe the City Buildings can
be a case study.
Johnson stated he would not recommend a mandatory program. Otherwise it wouldn’t
be popular.
Tofte stated the Austin Niehoff house would be a great sample project. She then asked
if there was a cost associated with an energy audit.
Johnson stated it doesn’t cost must and it could be subsidized.
Stewart stated this is a great opportunity for both HPC and the Sustainability Advisory
Board to work jointly on this project.
Speier recommended if a case study were created the HPC could work with the
Sustainability Advisory Board.
Johnson agreed.
Update/Discussion/Action – Rod and Gun Club
McCartney presented the letter from Rick Brew.
Speier stated he is only interested in moving the structure if there were funds available.
