City Council
Study Session Summary
August 23, 2011
Page 2of 5
evaluation and improvements of the club house. The GCABthanked
Council for their approval and support of this project.
Members encouraged non-golfer involvement in planning the future of
Coal Creek Golf and encouraged everyone to access “Friends of Coal
Creek Golf Course” on Facebook. Members are also building community
support through participation in the Downtown Street Faire and holding
Divots & Appetizer evenings.
th
Mayor Sisk said the 4of July fireworks at the golf coursethis year
encouraged non-golfer involvement and is good publicity for Coal Creek
Golf Course.
Member Tom Deany talked about ongoing analysis and developing
questions for a survey of the public. Kevin Nordby will be doing a survey
as part of analysis indeveloping the Golf Course Improvement/Master
Plan. Tom will coordinate with Mr. Nordby.
Member Rob Lathrop shared his concerns about the idea of building a
hotel/banquet facility that has been suggested by Fairway Suites. The
GCAB has spent a good part of the last 4 months making repairs and
improvements to the clubhouse. He’s worried if the City entertains the
idea of a hotel/banquet facility at Coal Creek, that this will put the GCAB
back about 1 ½ years on their progress. He estimates it will take
approximately $300,000 to remodel the clubhouse.
Ken Gambon emphasizedthatthe Golf Course must have a capital
reserve fund for future improvements, but doesn’t know where the money
will come from. The focus on golfer satisfaction continues. Ken requested
City Council continue to put their focus on Coal Creek Golf and continue to
make improvements. The Improvement/Master Plan when completed will
provide staff with information for future investments to the golf course.
Clubhouse Facility Improvements
City staff, Golf Course Advisory Board and Western Golf Properties has
been working with Jeff Van Sambeek of Lodestone Design Group to
develop ideas and propose improvements to the clubhouse in terms of a
remodel and to complete deferred maintenance. Mr. Van Sambeek
presented conceptual plans to Council. Bobby Heath, President of
Western Golf Properties, says they are evaluating the suggested
improvements to the clubhouse and calculatingwhat the return on
investment would be before they offer theirfinal decisions on the design,
but businessat Coal Creek Golfis better this year than last. The golf
course has seen 3,500 more rounds of golf than last year at this time.
