City Council
Meeting Minutes
September 6,2011
RESOLUTION No. 57, SERIES 2011 — A RESOLUTION DESIGNATING THE
THOMAS HOUSE LOCATED AT 700 LINCOLN AVENUE AN HISTORIC LANDMARK
— Public Hearing
Mayor Sisk opened the public hearing and requested a Staff presentation.
Principal Planner McCartney explained the request is to landmark an historical
residential structure and garage located at 700 Lincoln Avenue. The structure was built
between 1904 and 1906. The applicant and owners are Tommi and Mike McHugh.
Prior, the property had been owned by the Thomas family for 100 plus years. Nicholas
Thomas, Sr. came to Louisville from England with his wife and son, Mary and Nicolas
Jr., to work in the coal mines. Mary Thomas was one of the founders of the Methodist
Church in Louisville, still located at 741 Jefferson Avenue. Nicholas Jr. and Elizabeth
Thomas were married in 1899 and had the house at 700 Lincoln built. They had eight
children, all raised in the house. Of the eight children, Quentin, Mary and Elizabeth were
later owners of the house.
According to the applicant's submittal documents, the following has been restored or
altered: The front and back porch, and the southern dormers were added prior to1948.
There is no evidence of the age of the garage, but it is assumed it is over 50 years in
• age.
This house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in review
1986. Staff's e e
indicates the application was compliant to the following criteria:
1) Architectural Significance and Social Significance. The Thomas Family who lived in
this house for over 100 years were prominent members of Louisville society (founder of
Methodist Church) and industry (coal mine owners and operators).
COUNCIL COMMENT
Councilors supported the landmarking of the Thomas house.
Mayor Sisk requested public comment and hearing none, closed the public hearing.
MOTION: Councilor Muckle moved to approve Resolution No. 57, Series 2011,
seconded by Councilor Dalton. Roll call vote was taken. The motion passed by a vote
of 7-0.
RESOLUTION No. 58, SERIES 2011 — A RESOLUTION DESIGNATING THE
SOTTELI HOUSE LOCATED AT 1021 JEFFERSON AVENUE AN HISTORIC
LANDMARK— Public Hearing
• Mayor Sisk opened the public hearing and requested a Staff presentation.
