Horticulture & Forestry
Advisory Board
Minutes
Thursday, September 22, 2011
Library Meeting Room
951 Spruce Street
7:00
PM
Call to Order—Chair Mike Frontczak called the meeting to order at 7:10 pm.
I.
Roll Call—Board members present: Shelley Alm, Mike Frontczak, Meredith
II.
Preston-Eddy, Theresa Rounds, Matt Tepe, Ellen Toon. Board member
absent: Kimberly Heestand. Staff member present: Dean Johnson. Guests:
Kathy Kron, Axel Bishop.
The agenda was approved by all members.
III.
The minutes from the August 4, 2011 meeting were approved.
IV.
Public Comments on Items Not on the Agenda—No public present.
V.
Entry sign/landscape review—Kathy Kron, Parks and Recreation Project
VI.
Manager, and Axel Bishop of Design Concepts presented a conceptual drawing
of the City entryway at Steel Ranch, on the southwest corner of Highway 42
and Paschal Drive. Principles of design were explained to give background on
reasons for particular features of the design. For example, the different heights
and “layering” of plantings draw the observer’s eye into the area to create a
unique and memorable impression. The sign and the design of the surrounding
landscape will be utilized in future installations, and are intended to become “an
identifiable feature that is associated with all City entrances.” (Currently there
are nine locations in Louisville that are considered City entrances.) Discussion
continued regarding possible plant material (native grasses, cottonwoods vs
catalpas); extending tree planting across the street into Lafayette(for north
entry only); and possibly featuring a bench at each entrance.
