Louisville City Council Meeting
June 20, 2000
Page 18.

Keany asked Johnstone the normal width of a driveway, if the applicant was required to
construct a driveway.

Johnstone stated that a commercial driveway would be 24' plus curb, for a total of 25'.

Keany asked Johnstone if two separated driveways could be put within the easement.

Johnstone commented from a general circulation standpoint, it would not be Staff's
preference to have two conflicting driveways. He noted that the Commercial Guidelines
recommend separation.

Davidson asked a LFPD member, who drives the fire vehicles on a regular basis, to
address the safety issue.

James Medina, LFPD fire fighter, 211 Lafayette Street, stated that on a fire call he drives
his personal vehicle through the driveway to get to the fire trucks. He then drives the fire
trucks out the front access and after completing the call, he uses the driveway to return
the truck to the fire station. He stated that it is nice to have an open space and not have to
deal with other vehicles in the driveway. Medina stated that he is concerned about shared
access of the driveway because it is extremely difficult to negotiate the turning
movements in the fire trucks. He also stated that the LFPD could be utilizing the rear of
the fire station for training or maintenance and use the driveway as an exit route.

Davidson asked Medina if pedestrian traffic was a concern. Medina stated that pedestrian
traffic is always a concern and they practice extreme caution with regard to pedestrians.

Brown asked for clarification on the diagram of the primary location that most concerns
the LFPD. Medina stated that when driving a vehicle, the entry into the driveway is most
critical.

Keany asked Fire Chief Brewer if cars in a shared drive would impede the progress of the
trucks that are returning from a call. Brewer stated that the size of the fire trucks requires
a large turning radius and that a shared access is not acceptable for safety reasons.

Keany asked about signs that required yielding to fire equipment. He commented that a
"Stop Sign" or a "Yield to Emergency Vehicles" sign should be visible to the public.
Brewer stated that public adherence to signs is totally unpredictable and therefore would
still be a safety concern.

Keany stated that he understood the Fire Department's position on safety but was trying
to determine whether there was a good neighbor way to resolve this issue. Keany asked if

18
