t The 42 Gateway
Downtown Connection
A pedestrian underpass beneath the BNSF railroad at
South St. was identified as a key element in the 2006
Hwy. 42 Urban Renewal Area Plan and a high priority
public improvement project. At that time, very
conceptual graphics were created to illustrate:
• where potential RTD commuter rail facilities
would be located and how the underpass would be
necessary for rider circulation and access
• the relative size and level of impact that an
underpass would have on the road network
and adjacent properties
• the catalytic effect that a public infrastructure
project could have on the redevelopment area
• improvements to the city grid and limited existing
connectivity across the tracks
While these concepts helped illustrate a possible future,
they were produced without the accurate survey data,
railroad- specific regulations, and level of analysis that
have been generated as part of this project. Further
analysis revealed a heavily constrained site that required
a more creative solution than previously depicted.
'.L Cityof
`` Louisville
Redevelopment
Area
