As Dan Mellish was absent, Jennifer Strand provided a summary
of an Association of Northern Front Range Museums professional group meeting (ANFRM)
that they both attended along with Bridget concerning “Cultivating Individual Donors.”
Families are the key to Museum funding. Donor cultivation is a personal, face-to-face
activity in which a museum must first understand what motivates its donors and then create
opportunities to meet those needs and receive their support. Patterns of giving and a
broad overview of donor characteristics were shared:
-- 73% of museum giving comes from individuals.
--
Women give more often than men, but men give larger sums.
--
All want to feel connected and to be thanked.
--
People 65+ have 47 times more weather than those 35 and under.
--
Museums need support from all age and gender groups and need targeted outreach.
--
Older donors tend to be attracted to heritage tourism where they may travel and learn.
-- Millennials (30 and under) tend toward the new and value personal contact over
electronic contact. Cocktail parties and single volunteer day events may attract their
participation.
-- Women tend toward social events and are more likely to share what they learn with the
wider community.
-- When planning a building fund may need to consider attracting two kinds of donors:
support for construction and sustaining support.
Commission Comments and Discussion Items for Next Meeting.
E. None.
Close Fundraising Board Meeting and Adjourn.
F. The meeting adjourned at 8:10 p.m.
