PAGE THREE
SUBJECT: UPDATE /DISCUSSION — HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION (HPC)
DATE: MARCH 13, 2012
920 Main Street
The owner of 920 Main Street requested to modify the street facing facade to replace the two
windows and door with two doors and one window. The HPC believed the request would
dramatically affect the historic integrity of the structure. The HPC offered the owner design
assistance and were able to recommend an option for which the facade could be saved while
still creating two accesses to the building. The owner agreed and removed his demolition
request.
921 Main Street
The HPC discussed with the owner of this commercial property his interest in replacing the
building's historic windows. The HPC provided design assistance over a period of several
months before holding a public meeting with the property owner. At the public meeting the
property owner provided the HPC with a detailed history of why the windows were not worth
retaining and how they proposed to replace the windows. The demolition permit was released.
DESIGN ASSISTANCE:
The architects on the HPC continued to offer design assistance to a number of properties in
2011 to help owners sensitively preserve their structures while making additions or other
changes.
ALTERATION CERTIFICATES:
There were 4 Alteration Certificates approved in 2011. These include:
• Jacoe House — Back door replacement
• Austin Niehoff — Front door replacement
• 1117 Jefferson Avenue — Foundation tuck point
• 557 Jefferson Avenue — Replace back door
OTHER:
• The HPC created a page on Facebook to promote internet outreach for preservation
information.
• The HPC reviewed options and made a recommendation to the Downtown Business
Association (DBA) in the creation of an awning design for the Steinbaugh Pavilion
• The HPC worked with the City of Louisville's Facility Manager to replace the doors at
Jacoe Market and Austin - Niehoff House (Alteration Certificate)
2012 GOALS
• The HPC hopes to continue to work with staff and potential owners to find a way to
preserve and adaptively reuse the historic Grain Elevator.
• The HPC will work with City Staff on the amendment to the 2009 Comprehensive Plan.
The hope would be to include a Heritage section.
• The HPC will work on the creation of a Preservation Plan, which will create a framework
for which the future expenditures of the HPF can be applied.
• The HPC hopes to continue to offer a preservation program in conjunction with the
6
