Louisville Sustainability Advisory Board
Meeting Minutes
May 16, 2012
Page 2of 3
Doug G noted he’s glad to see LSAB participating in discussion on the Plan early-on, compared to
the prior plan update when our board was brought in late. He offered topics he’d like to see covered
in the plan:
Solid-waste management; passive solar orientation for new homes; green roofs; dealing with day-
burning lighting; less use of pesticides; dealing with noise pollution, particularly railroad noise in
downtown; possibility to partner with alternate energy suppliers.
Doug said he’d review other local-area comp plans to see if/how they address such issues.
Andynoted thefirst half of this year would be used to generate ideas, and that Troy wants a
collaborative effort with other boards.Members raised several topics about the Comp Plan and
Vision Statement:
Cullen -Something about "pride" should be mentioned; Innovation is important to mention; something
should eventually lead to high-performance buildings; integrationwith neighboring cities.
Mark –satisfied with the draft document, ready to endorse.
Ted –‘Progressive’ may not be an important word -innovative is an important word; good document.
Andy -Need for better language around Small Town paragraph; community service, economic
exchange and social networking language is off, too academic -paragraph should be more folksy;
Sustainable Practices paragraph rewrite is good; need for a potent document.
Dave S -Need for emotional connectivity with Small Town section; does the document have enough
to ‘go to bat’with (i.e.does it have potency)? hope for no ‘green washing’; Louisville is an ‘energy’
town -not just ‘mining’; the phrase‘sustainable economy’is weak; perhapsuse ‘balanced, vibrant
economy’as part of the language.
Dave Sasked, how far are we from having the ‘Sustainable’ vision statement from where we want it?
Our general discussion concluded and we concentrated on that particular section. Following that
discussion, the members present voted unanimously to recommend the following change to the
‘Sustainable’ segment of the draft Vision Statement, and to endorse it for presentation to the Planning
Commission and City Council.
Our proposed change:
We Value …
()
Sustainable Practices for the Environment, Community, and the Economy . . .
where the City
–our government, residents, property owners, and our business owners –strives to continually
challengeitself and to be innovative, with more sustainablepractices so that the needs of today
are met without compromising the needs of future generations.
from Troy’s draft copy:
We Value …
()
Sustainable Practicesfor the Economy, Community, and the Environment . . .
where the City
strives to continually challenge itself –our government, residents, property owners, and our
business owners –to more sustainable practices so that the needs of today are met without
compromising the needs of future generations.
