LouisvillePublicLibrary <br />VolunteersPolicy <br />Priortoengaginginanyvolunteeractivity,eachvolunteerwillberequiredtosubmitaCity <br />applicationformforvolunteerwork,andvisitwithasupervisorystaffmember.Uponapproval <br />ofthe"¯º¿¹HumanResourcesstaff,thevolunteermaybescheduledfortrainingandwork <br />assignments. <br />Volunteersmaybeaskedtoworkonprojectsthataresupportiveofstaffefforts.Examples <br />include:shelvingbooks,returningbooks,processingnewmaterials,storytelling,helpingto <br />prepareforprograms,assistingwithmaintenanceoftheverticalfiles,discardingmaterials, <br />maintenanceofperiodicals,publicrelationsactivities,et.al. <br />Hoursofvolunteerservicewillbedeterminedbythesupervisorystaffmemberindiscussion <br />withthevolunteer.Volunteersareexpectedtoarriveatthelibraryintimetobeginworkas <br />scheduledorcallthelibraryiftheywillbeabsent.Allvolunteerworkmustbecompleted <br />withinnormallibraryhours.ExceptionsmaybemadebytheLibraryDirector. <br />RecruitmentandSupervisionofVolunteers: <br />Volunteerswillbesoughtthroughavarietyofmethods(newspaperannouncement,inlibrary <br />publicity,requeststhroughvolunteercoordinationorganizations),tomeetspecificaswellas <br />generalprojectneeds.RecruitmentshallbetheresponsibilityoftheLibraryDirector,withthe <br />assistanceoftheCityofLouisvilleHumanResourcesOffice. <br />Volunteerswillworkdirectlywithlibrarystaffmemberstoreceivetrainingandcomplete <br />projects.Allvolunteerswillbeassignedoneprimarystaffmembertoguidethemintheirwork; <br />however,staffmembersmayofferguidancetoanyofthevolunteers. <br />Whenappropriateandaffordable,theLibraryFoundationmayfundthecostoftrainingfor <br />volunteerswhohavemadealongtermcommitmenttotheLibrary.Examplesofappropriate <br />trainingclassesare:bookmendingclassesatBCR,JuniorGreatBooksleadertraining,and <br />classesofferedbyCCLS. <br />Therewillbenoformalevaluationprocessforvolunteers. <br />RecruitmentandSupervisionofStudentInterns: <br />StudentinternswillbesoughtbytheAdultandYouthServicessupervisorsthrough <br />educationalcontactsinareaschoolsandcolleges.Ajobdescriptionwillbetailoredforeach <br />schoolprogramthatmayofferstudentinterns.Thejobdescriptionmuststressthevalueofthe <br />projectforbothstudentandLibrary.Arepresentativeoftheschoolorcollegewillusuallybe <br />involvedindevelopingthejobdescriptionandoutlineoftheproject. <br />Theprofessionalstaffmemberwhoshapesanindividualprojectwillberesponsibleforthe <br />trainingandsupervisionofthestudentintern.InternscanbeveryvaluabletotheLibrary,but <br />theLibrarymustalsoofferagenuineeducationalopportunity.Becausemuchstafftimewillbe <br />required,eachprojectmustbecarefullyplannedandapprovedbytheLibraryDirectorbefore <br /> <br />VolunteersPolicyPage2of3 <br />
