Historic Preservation Commission
Meeting Minutes
March 19, 2012

Lewis – I think we want to keep this structure standing up and I find it hard to understand why
we would not want to make sure the roof is structurally sound.
Stewart – According to the structural engineer this structural is at risk of collapsing if a natural
event, such as a large snow storm, were to occur.
Janice – I believe the engineer had stated a 40 MPH wind or 4 inches of snow could injure this
roof.
Lewis – I believe we should make a recommendation to Council and explain why this project
should go forward. If you look at the scope of this project the vast majority is the structural
component, so there isn’t much more to be done to reduce this cost.
Stewart – I agree.
McCartney – we will include in our staff report an analysis on how the HPC wants the full
amount to be carried forward.
La Grave – what is the total sum of the previous grants.
Stewart read from the staff report. It is about $14,919.
McCartney – we will double check our numbers before we carry it forward.
Lewis made a motion recommend approval of the grant amount, as presented, to stabilize the
roof because the structure is a landmarked residence. The request includes $12,800 plus a
20% contingency (as recommended by staff).
Fasick seconded the motion.
Stewart – the motion should include this is a life safety concern.
Lewis agreed.
Name Vote
Mike Koertje Yes
Heather Lewis Yes
Jessica Fasick Yes
Florian Speier Absent
Aquiles La Grave Abstain
Peter Stewart Yes
Steve Poppitz Absent
Motion passed: 4 to 0
McCartney asked if the agenda could be modified to allow the applicant from 801
Walnut Street to speak before the Comprehensive Plan – Visioning.
Stewart agreed.
