Open Space Advisory Board
Minutes
June 13, 2012
XI. Discussion: Economic Benefits of Trails and Open Space
Lafayette stated that open space andtrails are significant factorsin the decision to
relocate.
Coal Creek Village off of Public Creek north of CC advertises connection to the trails.
XII. Discussion: New Parks and Open Space Master Plans
Lafayette just received a grant to revise their master plan.
Louisvillejust finished final Master Plan inFeb 2012. This is the Cities first
comprehensive planfor Open Space, Parks, Recreation and Trails. During the process
we discovered that citizens are very interested in a developed way-finding system. This
system would help citizens know where they are and where the trails lead. There was
also strong citizen interest in more trail constructionand connections. Open Space will
be focused on more resource management not just maintenance as well as more
education and volunteer efforts.
XIII. Discussion: Education and Outreach Activities
Ember has led, created and implemented the Education and Outreachprogram. Some
program examples include: Fishing Frenzy, Raptors,Bird Hikes, Live Snakesprograms,
Exploring Waterways etc.The two largest events arethe Fishing Frenzy (capped at
150 children plus parents) and the Spooktacular Critters Event (capped at 100 children
plus adults). For the two large events we advertise in recreation catalog, on the City
websiteand in the City newsletter. For small programs we post flyers on Open Space
Properties (30+ flyers) and send announcements out on Facebook and on our listserve.
We have approximately 150 volunteers that work on weed pulling, raptor monitoring,
property adoptions etc. For volunteers we offer single day projects as well as long term
monitoring projects.
XIV. Discussion: Challenges/Success in management. Such as: Dogs off-leash
on DM/Thomas Farm/Harney-Lastoka Open Space
Lafayette–
Successes – Barn at the ThomasFarm.
Challenges - Social trails and off-leash areas, ditch maintenance.
Louisville –
Challenges – managing trail uses (bikes, dogs, runners, hikers). Fire breaks and
proscribed burns. Lafayetteburned at outdoor classroom (cattails) and Greenlee
Wildlife preserve for habitat purposes. Lafayettefire department recommends that
Open Space Department mow 10 foot swath at borders with private property. Lafayette
tries to do thiswhen reasonable.
