Downtown Connection
A pedestrian underpass beneath the BNSF railroad at
South St. was identified as a key element in the 2006
Hwy. 42 Urban Renewal Area Plan and a high priority
public improvement project. At that time very concep-
tual graphics were created to illustrate:
• where potential RTD commuter rail facilities
would be located and how the underpass would be
necessary for rider circulation and access
• the relative size and level of impact that an
underpass would have on the road network
and adjacent properties
• the catalytic effect that a public infrastructure
project could have on the redevelopment area
• improvements to the city grid and limited con-
nectivity across the tracks
While those graphics (below) were helpful for under-
standing the general concept, they were produced with-
out the accurate survey data, railroad specific regulations,
and level of analysis that have been generated as part of
this project. That analysis reveals a heavily constrained
site that requires a more creative solution that previously
depicted.
LCity,/
Louisville
r-
ra
•4
Fiaroeer S
Griffith St
j ,!
I H-- '-
. t
Redevelopment
Area
1 ,*' '.'t —1:7 1 I
Downtown
Snort w
mice St
RiA1
MU-R
H WY-C
Park
RTD
