Youth Advisory Board
Meeting Minutes
9/20/12
This is also called a “strong manager” system. City council is made up of
members from each city Ward. What Ward do YOU live in? Only people
within that Ward can vote for their council member.
City Council’s job is to set strategy/policies for the city of Lousville
City staff do the day to day work of running the city, and answer to the City
Manager, Malcolm Fleming, and he answers to the City Council
One of the most significant things the City Council does is set the yearly
budget. Mayor Muckle advises YAB members to stay apprised of this
process.
Some other important things that will come before the City Council in the
near future:
i. Comprehensive Plan
ii. Hwy. 36 reconstruction
iii. McCaslin Bridge diverging diamond project
iv. Building four new underpasses
Mayor Muckle had three questions for the YAB members: 1) What things
do you care about in Louisville? 2) What are the things the city is doing
well? and 3) What could they do better?
i. David- asked about the community garden across from King
Soopers. Knows kids/people always talk about what vegetables
they are growing, and find it very rewarding to grow their won with
their parents.
ii. Joi- what happened to the plan to expand the sidewalks/patios
downtown? Mayor- still looking at ways to make the seasonal
patios seem more permanent, but will be keeping them seasonal
for now so that they are a special treat.
iii. Tyler- thinks wider sidewalks would be good, especially if they build
more residences around main Street in the future because then the
wider sidewalks would accommodate more traffic
iv. Bonnie- likes how Louisville keeps the “small town feel” and how
much open space there is. Perhaps Louisville could use something
th
like the 29 St. marketplace- would be a good place to hang out
and shop
v. Kaitlin- (Re: Main Street) likes that you can walk everywhere, but as
a driver it is hard. Might be better to have a place like the pearl
Street Mall for pedestrians downtown
