Memorandum
To: Historical Commission
From: Bridget Bacon, Museum Coordinator
Date: October 9, 2012
Re: Museum Coordinator’s Report
As a reminder, the Louisville City Council’s study session with the Historical Commission
has been rescheduled for Tuesday, October 23, 2012. The study session starts at 7 PM.
The Museum’s summertime hours have ended and we have returned to the Fall/Winter
hours. This means closing on Friday evenings and being open again on Tuesdays. The
Fall/Winter hours are 10:00 to 3:00 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. We plan
to shift to the warm weather hours again starting in early April, in order to coincide with the
First Friday Art Walk in April.
Do plan to attend the upcoming Museum/Library program “Homefront Heroines: the
WAVES of World War II” scheduled for Monday, November 5, 7 PM, at the Library. CU
Professor Kathleen Ryan will discuss her project to collect and share stories about women
who were Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service. Dr. Ryan has conducted
oral histories of these women and will discuss her project and film.
Diane Marino’s walking tour of downtown Louisville, “Legends of La Farge,” took place on
th
Saturday, October 6 with about 20 participants (despite the drizzly weather) and it
yielded $60 in donations to the Commission.
The citizen group that Robert Sampson organized earlier this year to discuss how
Louisville might observe the 100th anniversary of the shooting death of town marshal
Victor Helburg in October 1915 met for the second time, and four of Victor Helburg’s
descendants also attended. The informal group includes Brian Chamberlin and Jennifer
Strand from the Historical Commission as well as myself. The group plans to meet again
after the first of the year. Others who may be interested are welcome to attend.
Teachers at Louisville Elementary are planning a charette on the topic of Louisville’s
purchase of the Grain Elevator for their fourth graders later this month. This civics project
will involve the students looking at the different perspectives and considerations that go
into the process by which a city makes a decision. I’ve been asked to take part in this
project, along with staff members from the City Planning Dept.
I am currently working on a report about the history of the City-owned Austin Niehoff
House at 717 Main Street for the Planning Department.
Museum Visitors Report (these statistics represent visits to the Museum itself, and not
inquiries that come in by email or phone): September visitors: 229; YTD 1812. The year to
date number represents an increase of 76% over the same period in 2011.
