•
November 7, 2002
Louisville Horticulture & Forestry Advisory Board
Susan called meeting to order; Judith called to accept minutes, David 2"d. Group approved.
In attendance: Dave Sexton, Judy, Betty, Mike, David, Patty, Judy and Terry. Public: Bruce Goodman, Sean
Malone (Norris Dullea), Cara Mela (Roth Sheppard).
Old Business
Police Building
Discussion of final PUD submittal, but first for comment. Anticipate changes. Conscience of drought; attempting
to design with drought- tolerant plants. South - facing, hot slope for site; raised planter with native plants planned for
entrance (gambel oak, native monarda, black -eyed susans /coneflower, etc.). Looking for limited, shallow irrigation
use. Mixed low -water grass seeded, use of spray irrigation for native mix turf.
Plan is also subject to change because of the rejection of the tax increase /rec center plan.
Rocky Mountain Maples, pruned to small tree form suggested along NE side of building as much shade will be there
much of the year.
Advisory members discussed plant selections, locations and made suggestions of additional plants to add to the
suggested plant pallet. Group proceeded to mark the prints with comments /suggestions. Sean showed slides of
native grass mixtures used in Rock Creek, but irrigated some with sections adjacent to sidewalks also manicured.
Was appealing while keeping a low irrigation requirement. Group suggested using mixed low & moderate water
grass mixes instead of bluegrass along sidewalks on perimeter of building.
Suggested native grass mix: buffalo grass, stream bank wheat, sheep fescue, big bluestem, side oats grama, blue
grama, switchgrass, indiangrass, little bluestem. This could be used in low maintenance and groomed areas. This
may change.
Next planning commission meeting is believed to be 12/10. Sean took our markups and suggestions to use in
revising the plan. We will review the changes on 12/5 at our regular meeting.
New Business
Historic Museum Landscape Design Criteria
Betty met with Catherine Abel, the donator of the home, and developed suggestions of key items to consider for
requirements. The requirements include:
• Historical accuracy
• Cottage garden
• Sitting area
• Waterwise
• Historic plants — roses, daylilies, lilacs, iris
• Italian, Polish, Welsh heritage of city
• Low maintenance
• Arbor or trellis
• Set up host events (city, weddings, historic commission, etc.)
• Hummingbird friendly plantings
• Redevelop or utilize old foundation
• Overall site plan which can be initiated in phases
• Perhaps accommodate chicken coops and old farm pieces.
