Brad Chronowski
December 8, 1999
Page 2
In general, the quality of plant species in this native community is relatively high and
would be higher with successful weed management. Its small size and location
preclude the community from providing much habitat for wildlife other than butterflies
and other insects. Because of past agricultural use and current development in Boulder
County and surrounding areas, this community type is uncommon. It is very likely that
there are few (if any) other examples of this plant community remaining in the City of
Louisville.
Future impact to the existing community likely will be of two types: 1) reduction in the
extent of the community, resulting from construction of permanent structures or
landscaping and 2) reduction in the quality of the community if more weeds become
established as adjacent areas are disturbed and not revegetated or if there is "temporary"
construction disturbance within the community. Development of homes on the parcel
to the south may have some benefit by removing the seed source of weedy species
immediately adjacent to the native community, although other species may be
introduced from flower gardens planted by homeowners.
The parcel at the northwest corner of McCaslin Boulevard and South Boulder Road
provides an example of plant species found in a native grassland community that is
uncommon in Louisville and Boulder County. Once disturbed, it is very difficult if not
impossible to restore the plant association to its native state.
I hope this assessment provides you with information that will aid you in determining
the future of the site. I would be happy to discuss ways to avoid or minimize
disturbance to the plant community during planning or designing for the site.
Please contact me if you i,.ve any questions or require additional information.
Sincerely,
Mary L.
