Historical Commission
Minutes
September 19, 2012
1. Approval of Deeds of Gifts from donors. The Commission voted to accept the
following donations:
a. From John Negri, now 92 and a former member of the Louisville hose cart
team in the 1930s, a handmade model of the hose cart.
b. From the City of Louisville,1940 drawing of the city water system and 1950s
drawing of the sanitation district.
c. From Richard Channel, two items relating to Louisville businesses: a small
bank created as advertising for Conoco and a tire tube patch kit with a Camel
cigarette logo.
d. From Shirley Bodhaine, a photo of the third grade class of 1941-42 and a 1938
certificate showing that her father was elected as a town trustee.
e. From the Louisville Fire Department, a medal and a sticker commemorating
the Department’s 125th anniversary.
f. From Freeman Clyncke, scans of historic family photos.
g. From Jim Pelzer, a 1940s-era photograph of the Track Inn building.
h. From Ron and Arlene Leggett, Louisville Times issues from the 1950s and
1960s, copies of “The Lookout,” and Louisville High School football programs.
2. Advice sought on donations of other artifacts being offered. Carried over from
the last meeting, the Commission considered whether to accept the donation of two
Louisville street signs from the corner of Walnut and Lincoln. The donor remembers
them being there when she was married in the 1950s and asked to have them when
they were later replaced by the city’s updated signs. Dave Ferguson concurs that
they are at least this old and believes they may have been there in the 1930s. Bridget
brought the signs. Members of the Commission were unified in their enthusiasm for
accepting the signs into the collection and looks forward to accepting these signs
when Bridget presents the deed next month.
3. Questions regarding Museum Coordinator’s written report. There were no
questions, but an update was given on maintenance in the Tomeo House.
B. Discussion – Pioneer Award nomination process. The Commission will discuss
nominees in the Oct. meeting and determine the recipient at the following meeting.
C. Chairperson’s Report. Dan reported that the Brown Bag on polio presented by Bridget
was particularly interesting as was the input by residents Roger Del Forge, Ady Kupfner
and Bob Del Pizzo. The importance of city cleanliness in defeating polio was also
interesting. The next Brown Bag will be in Dec. and will be based on the first English
settlers. Anne Robinson’s walking tour drew 25 participants. Diane Marino will lead the
last walking tour of the season on Oct. 6.
1.Reminder – Study Session with City Council – Oct. 23, 2012. Planning meeting for
th
.
the Study Session is October 9
2.Possible reschedule of November Commission meeting (currently falls on
Wednesday, November 21, the night before Thanksgiving).
