IL: *}}
Louisville
COLORADO • SINCE 1878
CITY COUNCIL COMMUNICATION
AGENDA ITEM 8A
SUBJECT: LOUISVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL 4TH GRADE
PRESENTATIONS REGARDING THE GRAIN ELEVATOR
DATE: DECEMBER 4, 2012
PRESENTED BY: PLANNING AND BUILDING SAFETY & HISTORIC MUSEUM
SUMMARY:
The 4th Grade of Louisville Elementary School, through the leadership of 4th Grade
Teacher Tiffany Boyd, worked with the Planning Division and representatives of the
Museum to recommend a fate for the Louisville Grain Elevator. The project included
three classes and was designed as the participatory class project for the Civics
Program.
On Friday, November 2nd Scott Robinson, Bridget Bacon, Richard Wheeler, and Sean
McCartney presented factual information about the Grain Elevator to the 4th grade
classes of Tiffany Boyd, Karen Fohrman, and Jessica Lawrence. This information was
to help the students to decide whether to recommend saving or demolishing the
building. The students were not told of City Council's decision on the Grain Elevator in
hopes of soliciting the children's unbiased ideas.
Students were divided into teams of three and four to make recommendations. All three
classes presented to a panel of 5 judges: Alicia Mahoney (Library Board), Dan Mellish
(Historic Commission), Richard Wheeler, Scott Robinson, and Sean McCartney on
Wednesday, November 14th at City Hall. At the end of each presentation, the panel
gave feedback. The children appeared excited to be part of the project.
Scott Robinson and Sean McCartney revealed Council's recommendation to preserve
the Grain elevator at the end of the presentations. There were both cheers and jeers as
the obviously competitive children showed their emotions about the decision.
All involved were thrilled with the outcome of this effort and showing how involvement in
a community begins at an early age. All the children spoke with passion and conviction
about a subject they believe is significant to their community. The top 3 groups selected
by their teachers will present their recommendations to City Council on December 4th
FISCAL IMPACT:
None.
RECOMMENDATION:
None.
ATTACHMENT(S):
None.
CITY COUNCIL COMMUNICATION
32
