City Council
Study Session Summary
October 23, 2012
Page 2of7
Update /Discussion — Annual Presentation by the Louisville Public Library
Board of Trustees
Meredith Davis and Sheri Lancton presented 2011 -2012 accomplishments.
> The library continues to break records for circulation. June, the highest
month, broke a record for the highest ever circulation.
> Louisville residents had good things to say about the library in this year's
citizen survey. Approval ratings are high with the trend increasing
annually. Approximately 80% of Louisville households have a Louisville
library card. Superior was not included in the citizen survey, but their
usage of the library is estimated at 20 -22 %.
> New librarians hired — Children's Librarians, Adrienne Gass and Kristen
Bodine, and Adult Services Librarian, Sean Lamborne. The additional
Children's Librarian came from a transfer internally from Adult Services.
> Biggest challenge continues to be adapting to the changing technology
and using it to the Library's advantage; using Facebook, added 12 e-
readers, there is a total of 4,000 Ebooks in the collection. Summer
reading up 19% due to online registration, and "Chuck" the book handler
has reduced staff time. "Chuck" handles 1,200 items per hour — 10 times
more than by hand.
> Special Exhibits through the Space Science Institute were on display this
past year, Discover Earth in November of last year and Discover Tech in
August of this year. Future exhibits from the Space Science Institute may
depend on funding. The Louisville Library is the first to receive these
exhibits and then they move on to other locations in the country.
> On the Same Page — Second year for the program with the communities
of Louisville, Lafayette and Superior. Program - related sessions were
scaled back this year based on last year's feedback. Some changes
made this year were to focus on fewer programs, focus on adults, and
cultivate partnerships with the Louisville Cultural Council, Historic Museum
and Children's Museums.
> Early Literacy — educating parents on early learning principles; brochure
available in Children's area. Emphasis on early literacy will continue for
the next several years.
> Library BOT Policies Revision — The Board is reviewing the policy manual
and bringing it up -to -date by figuring out what is essential and what is not
essential.
> 2012 Strategic Planning Process —The process is underway to revise the
current Strategic Plan. The last plan was developed 4 years ago. Goal is
to create a more flexible plan that can provide guidance to staff, and then
reviewed annually. The new mission of the Louisville Public Library is to
inform, involve, and inspire the communities we serve.
2012 Board Issues /Challenges —
> The role of libraries
