Library Board of Trustees <br />Minutes <br />March 8, 2012 <br />Page 3 of 5 <br /> <br /> <br />B.Staff Presentation: Denise Brooks, Early Literacy Initiatives <br /> <br />rvices Supervisor, spoke to the Board about <br />early literacy initiatives ALA) Every Child <br />Ready to Read program which was started in 2004. <br /> <br />This year, the State of Colorado has launched the One Book 4 Colhich provides <br />a copy of a new book to every four-year-old in the state. Louisville is participating and <br />will have 210 copies of the book available. <br /> <br />Another important component of the early literacy initiatives is <br />they can also teach literacy to their children. <br /> <br />C.Strategic Planning <br /> <br />1)Mission statements from other libraries <br /> <br />The Board discussed the sample mission statements from other lib <br />generally agreed that creating a shorter mission statement for t <br />Library is an important goal for this strategic plan. <br /> <br />There is unanimous agreement that the next strategic plan should <br />mission. <br /> <br />One of the first steps for the Board is to make an assessment of where the Library <br />is now with respect to the 2008 plan. The three Services Respons <br />core of the 2008 plan are: <br />1.Information Fluency <br /> <br />2.Satisfying Curiosity <br /> <br />3.Stimulate Imagination <br /> <br /> <br />Service responses will remain an important focus for the new strategic plan as will <br />such issues as funding, library districts, and the IGA with Supe <br />Another important area to examine is national trends in public libraries, which <br />include: <br />1.Teaching Early Literacy Skills <br /> <br />a.Libraries as advocates for literacy <br /> <br />2.Continued Depressed Economy <br /> <br />a.Sparking imagination and learning through continued access to free <br /> <br />services and materials <br />b.Meet demand for materials, programs, wireless, and computers <br /> <br />3.Community Places and Spaces <br /> <br />a.Building community inside and outside <br /> <br /> <br />
