2013 WATERING RESTRICTIONS?
It is still really dry out there!! While the irriga-
don season is over, we are still watching our
water levels carefully. Another warm, dry winter
could stretch the City's water resources to the
point where we will need to impose more serious
drought management steps. We will know how the mountain
snow pack is, or is not, accumulating fairly early in 2013. If
the snow pack is low and we are not receiving much moisture,
you can expect to have water restrictions as early as April.
We ask you to continue to use water wisely and look for
additional information next year. Let's all hope for a very wet
winter!!
DON'T FORGET TO WATER
YOUR TREES THIS WINTER
Trees this year are already under stress from the
drought and will need extra care to survive this win-
ter. We encourage winter tree watering so trees have a better
chance of survival if we have another dry summer. Addition-
ally, winter tree watering does not use so much water as to
impact our water reserves for next year.
Root systems can spread 2 -3 times wider than the height
of the tree. Most of the tree's absorbing roots are in the top
12 inches of the soil. Water should be applied to many loca-
tions within the dripline (from the trunk to the end of the
branches).
1 WATER DEEPLY AND SLOWLY. Apply water so it moist-
ens the critical root zone to a depth of twelve inches.
Methods for watering include a deep root fork or needle,
soaker hose or soft spray wand. If a deep root fork or
needle is used, insert the device no deeper than eight
inches into the soil.
1 How MUCH WATER SHOULD I APPLY? As a general
survival rule, apply ten gallons of water for each diameter
inch of the tree. For example, a two -inch diameter tree
will need twenty gallons per watering.
1 WHEN SHOULD I WATER? Water one to two times per
month during October — March, on days when it is above
40 degrees, and there is no snow cover. To help conserve
soil moisture apply organic mulch within the dripline to
a depth of four inches. Leave a six -inch space between the
mulch and trunk of the tree.
1 CONSISTENT MOISTURE IS NEEDED. Drought stressed
trees are more vulnerable to disease and insect infestations
and branch die back. Keep a watchful eye for anything
that looks out of the ordinary.
For more information or to ask questions about watering,
please contact the City Forester at 303.335.4733.
PARADE OF LIGHTS
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 7
7:00 PM
J oin us in Historical Downtown Louisville
for the annual Parade of Lights.
