Open Space Advisory Board
Minutes
Feb. 12, 2013

a. 2013 Education Program Additions –
Linda has contacted a local author about possibly speaking, but has not
yet heard back.
Tom has recommended a book about mountain lions (Beast in the
Garden) as a possible idea for a “book club” type presentation.

b. Social Trail Article of Interest
Linda came across an article about social trails. One point of interest was
that it discussed how to use natural features to “guide” people onto the
appropriate paths. The article will be distributed at the next board meeting.

VII. Public Comments on Items Not on the Agenda
Caryn Greer, 161 Raintree Ct. – Ms. Greer reported that there are no
biodegradable baggies for cleaning up after dogs at the Warembourg
property.

VIII. Discussion: Davidson Mesa Ridgeline Trail Planning Update
a. Located West of the Dog Off-Leash Area
Presented by: Allan Gill, Parks & Recreation Project Manager
The new trail will be built where an existing social trail currently runs. The
trail is at the ridge line, west of the off-lease area.
The project will be complete by late spring 2013. Construction will
probably take between 2 weeks and 1 month, depending on weather.
The new crusher fine trail will be about 3,025 linear feet. The new trail will
be about 4’ wide. This is narrower than the standard, but it permits the
trail to retain a more natural feel and leaves a smaller footprint on the
Mesa.
Construction budget is about $20k. Once construction documents are
finalized, the City will seek bids.
Mr. Gill noted that the existing social trail is very rocky, so the contractor
will have to scrape rock and some top soil.
A construction zone will be identified, and the contractors will have
approximately 10 feet within which to work. Re-vegetation will be required
after the project ends.
Clark Hamilton, 7712 Spring Dr. – Mr. Hamilton and his wife are
volunteers on Davidson Open Space.
o He reported that there is a social trail at the mid-point in the new
ridgeline trail that goes down the slope at about a 20% grade.
o He stated that the social trail is very rocky and badly eroded, so
people are expanding that social trail to avoid the poor condition of
the main stem of the social trail.
o Mr. Hamilton would like to recommend that a switch-back style trail
is put in, in order to prevent erosion.
4
