Horticulture & Forestry
Advisory Board
Minutes
Thursday, March 7, 2013
Spruce Room--City Hall
749 Main Street
7:00 PM

I. Call to order--Vice-Chair Theresa Rounds called the meeting to order at 7:05 pm.

II. Roll call--Board members present: Shelly Alm, Neal Griggsmiller, Erik Gustafson, Mark
Newland, Theresa Rounds, Ellen Toon, Beverlee White. Board member absent: Mike
Frontczak. Staff member present: Chris Lichty. City Council member present: Susan Loo.
Guest: Barb Newland.

III. The agenda was approved by all members.

IV. The minutes from the February 7, 2013 meeting were approved.

V. Public Comments on Items Not on the Agenda--No public present. Library talk by Ryan
Schmitt was very successful, which can be attributed to several factors, including subject matter,
timing, and announcements published in the Daily Camera. The library meeting room was filled
beyond capacity, and about 20 latecomers were turned away because of fire code. Suggestions
for future events: a larger venue such as the Rec Center meeting room (which would also
provide more parking); and taking reservations to control the number of attendees.

VI. Turf type for pergola landscaping--Discussion of merits of Kentucky bluegrass vs Reveille,
a hybrid of Texas bluegrass and Kentucky bluegrass which is more drought- and heat-tolerant
than Kentucky bluegrass.

VII. 2013 Arbor Day--Thursday, April 18, mid-morning at either Louisville Elementary or Coal
Creek Elementary. Chris has contacted both principals and will finalize plans soon.

VIII. City Council Study Session--Tuesday, April 23. (time TBD) Items to present to Council
may include accomplishments during past year; reiterate project requests for budget; and any
other possible projects such as play equipment for the Arboretum. HFAB will produce outline
for study session at the regular meeting on Thursday, April 4.
