5

Shade: Another factor that can lead to some of the previous issues and year round is shade. Shade affects
several properties of the turfgrass plant morphology including leaf thickness, plant height, density, tillering,
growth habit and root: shoot ratio. The plants in these areas will have lower carbohydrate reserves, reduced
transpiration, lower respiration, increased succulence and reduced cuticle thickness. These plants have a
tendency to be weaker and do not receive to most efficient light in the morning to enhance growth. Early
morning light is best between the “blue and red” spectrum for optimal photosynthetic activity. The tree
population at Coal Creek is thick and creates its own problems. Shade issues can be seen on holes 3, 5,
and 18.

12
