5  <br />  <br /> <br /> Shade: Another factor that can lead to some of the previous issues and year round is shade. Shade affects <br />several properties of the turfgrass plant morphology including leaf thickness, plant height, density, tillering, <br />growth habit and root: shoot ratio. The plants in these areas will have lower carbohydrate reserves, reduced <br />transpiration, lower respiration, increased succulence and reduced cuticle thickness. These plants have a <br />tendency to be weaker and do not receive to most efficient light in the morning to enhance growth. Early <br />morning light is best between the “blue and red” spectrum for optimal photosynthetic activity. The tree <br />population at Coal Creek is thick and creates its own problems.
