Library Board of Trustees
Meeting Minutes
May 9, 2013
VII. New Business
A. Superior Town Center (Sandy Pennington or Debra Williams)
This item was recently publicized in the local news; however, discussion on this issue is
very premature and has been tabled indefinitely. The Board is interested in hearing
about the plans, which may include a library, when Superior is ready to discuss them.
VIII. Ongoing Business
A. E-books, Libraries and the Publishing Industry (Jeannie Schuman)
1) Trustee Role in Educating the Public
Jeannie had invited people, contacted during the Library's Open House during
National Library Week, to come speak about the issue at a Board meeting. Five
people signed up. Jeannie also noted that the public is still largely unaware of the
issue, and is unsure of how the Board can help educate the public. After
discussion, Shari noted that the Board doesn't have enough information to make a
decision and would like Library staff to provide some direction. It was noted that
the big publishers are moving in the right direction, so perhaps there is no need for
the Board's action on this issue.
B. On The Same Page
Becky revealed the title, which will be officially announced during `Art Night Out' in
Lafayette on June 21. She noted that programming has been set that tie in with the
themes of the book. There will also be several book discussions.
C. iHelp and the Youth Advisory Board
Hank contacted the YAB about recruiting teen volunteers for the iHelp program. The
group disbands over the summer, so he and the YAB will reevaluate at the end of the
summer.
D. Policy Manual
1) Distribute updated TOC and Conflict of Interest
Karen distributed the new pages. The policy manual review that began in 2011 is
now complete.
IX. Director's Report
A. Customer Service Survey
In March, the Library conducted a follow-up survey to the one completed a year ago. In
addition to the same five questions, four new questions were added to help assess the
effectiveness of new programming initiatives and the automated return system.
Overall, the Library received 97%positive responses, up from 95%in 2012. Staff is now
working to address some of the `negative' comments, such as adding another book group
to address unmet demand.
