Memorandum
To: Joe Stevens, Director of Parks and Recreation
From: Chris Lichty, City Forester
Date: August 13th, 3013
Re: Root Pruning at Coal Creek Golf Course
This memo details the specification for installation of root barrier at four greens at Coal Creek Golf
Course. The four greens identified for root pruning and installation of root barrier are: #18 Green,
Practice Green, #5 Green and #6 Green. Each attached map shows the location and linear feet of
barrier required. Distance to base of effected trees is also shown.
After consultation with Chris Swim, Superintendant of Agronomy at Lakewood Country Club, the
method of installation and types of barrier were determined. A trench 2 feet deep is dug with a
common irrigation trencher. Larger roots encountered are cut smooth using a pruning saw or loppers.
The barrier is installed vertically in the trench and backfilled appropriately. Many types of barriers were
discussed. The best results come from using an herbicide impregnated barrier installed at the full 2
feet depth. The product most common for this type of application is BioBarrier. It is available in widths
of 24 inches and is roughly $5 per foot. It is impregnated with a slow release form of Trifluralin, a very
low toxicity herbicide which does don’t leech readily.
The total linear feet of barrier installation for the four specified green is roughly 435 ft. This would
equate to $2175 in material costs. The City can rent a trencher and use in-house staff to dig the
trenches. The cost of renting a trencher for a couple days would be around $500. A crew of three
should be able to accomplish the installation in couple days.
It would be best to do the installation during the late fall or early winter of 2013. After installation, we
can monitor the greens for improved turf growth and overall health.

On another note, tree replacement is proceeding and should be completed in late August, early
September. The City will have an additional one year warranty for these replaced trees.

Please let me know if you have questions or need additional information!

Chris Lichty, City Forester
City of Louisville, Colorado
(303) 335-4733
ChrisL@louisvilleco.gov

Attachments: 4 maps

PARKS & RECREATION

6
