5 DEPA R TMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY T � 1 he Department of Public Safety is responsible for three major Municipal functions: ' t.',1 ' tt -',"itool',„!; Police Services, Code Enforcement, and Emergency Preparedness. -• Police Services include the protection of life and property, the prevention of crime, and detection and arrest of offenders, the preservation of public peace, and the enforcement of Federal and State laws, and - the ordinances of the City of Louisville. The responsibility for monitoring compliance with ordinances relating to animal control, weeds, trash, and hazards rests with the Code Enforcement Officer. The City Council established an Emergency Preparedness Agency within the Department of Public Safety, with the responsibility of researching, < planning, and drafting emergency plans relating to ' ..- natural and man-made disasters. Oto. A pro-active Crime Prevention Program was initiated during the past year. Police Officers _.rte! . conducted the City's first Neighborhood Watch Program, a crime prevention program which enlists Jim Philips Patrol Officer the active participation of citizens in cooperation with law enforcement to reduce crime in the community. We invite all interested citizens to participate and take an active part in the Crime Prevention Program. Also during 1982, the Police Department implemented a "Ride-Along Program" enabling interested members of the community to accompany police officers on routine patrol and observe police , operations in progress. It is hoped this process will `., ' ` help citizens become more aware of police functions, and allow the officers to be more aware of the concerns of the public.
