5 <br /> DEPA R TMENT <br /> OF PUBLIC SAFETY <br /> T � <br /> 1 he Department of Public Safety is <br /> responsible for three major Municipal functions: ' t.',1 ' tt -',"itool',„!; <br /> Police Services, Code Enforcement, and Emergency <br /> Preparedness. -• <br /> Police Services include the protection of life and <br /> property, the prevention of crime, and detection and <br /> arrest of offenders, the preservation of public peace, <br /> and the enforcement of Federal and State laws, and - <br /> the ordinances of the City of Louisville. <br /> The responsibility for monitoring compliance with <br /> ordinances relating to animal control, weeds, trash, <br /> and hazards rests with the Code Enforcement Officer. <br /> The City Council established an Emergency <br /> Preparedness Agency within the Department of Public <br /> Safety, with the responsibility of researching, < <br /> planning, and drafting emergency plans relating to ' ..- <br /> natural and man-made disasters. Oto. <br /> A pro-active Crime Prevention Program was <br /> initiated during the past year. Police Officers _.rte! . <br /> conducted the City's first Neighborhood Watch <br /> Program, a crime prevention program which enlists Jim Philips <br /> Patrol Officer <br /> the active participation of citizens in cooperation with <br /> law enforcement to reduce crime in the community. <br /> We invite all interested citizens to participate and take <br /> an active part in the Crime Prevention Program. <br /> Also during 1982, the Police Department <br /> implemented a "Ride-Along Program" enabling <br /> interested members of the community to accompany <br /> police officers on routine patrol and observe police , <br /> operations in progress. It is hoped this process will `., ' ` <br /> help citizens become more aware of police functions, <br /> and allow the officers to be more aware of the <br /> concerns of the public.
