Louisville Center for the Arts Use Policy (Proposed)
The Louisville Center for the Arts (LCA) is designated as a community facility dedicated to the
advancement and preservation of art, music, theater, dance, zoology, botany, natural history, and
cultural history in the City of Louisville and shall be used for such art and cultural programs/
events beneficial to the citizens of Louisville and its visitors.
The scheduling and coordination of building uses shall be overseen by a governing board,
appointed by the Mayor and comprising four citizens representing the Louisville Cultural
Council, the Louisville Art Association, Coal Creek Theater of Louisville and CenterStage
Theatre Company(referred to as the resident arts organizations).
To accommodate the interests of longer term planning, the governing board will meet in August
of each year to identify dates for multi-day events and for regular Cultural Council events for the
upcoming year. At this time, the governing board will also identify a block of time in the
upcoming year to be reserved for annual maintenance and/or major repairs.
To accommodate the interests of flexibility, and in particular coordinating with the cycle of
turnover for the Cultural Council, the prime days of Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be offered
for general community rental no more than 4 weeks in advance, unless the event is deemed an art
or cultural event as described in the paragraph above and agreed to by the governing board.
Such public rental shall be available only to Louisville residents.
The guiding principles for the governing body will be:
•to maximize and prioritize availability for events open to the public (as opposed to
rehearsal times, social events, or closed meetings);
•to ensure that resident arts organizations have generally equal access to use of the facility;
•to minimize the effects of overlapping uses on each of the user groups.
The governing board will prepare and post a storage plan so that all building users will
understand where items are to be stored at the end of each use.
The City of Louisville will provide routine cleaning and maintenance to include:
•the facility interior and exterior, including annual painting;
•the common use items inside the facility including the kitchen fixtures; the seating, tables
and stage fixtures; the lighting system; window coverings; and the piano;
