guideline, not a standard, will allow the City and the Fire District to work together
on a case-
essential fire access requirements without compromising roadway safety.

BCBOA REQUESTED ALTERNATIVES

Peter Stewarts email suggestion 9/18/13
Rather than a blanket fire sprinkler requirement for all new residential units, Mr.
Stewart suggested the City require sprinklers to only those residential structures
with less than a 5-foot fire separation between individual units. This concept
has precedence per R302.1 & R301.1. The result would be that all attached and
very closely spaced single family residences have automatic fire sprinklers
and traditionally arranged single family residences would be exempt.

Amend Automatic Fire Sprinkler Systems / IRC 313. Sprinklers shall
distance from the proposed structure to the property line in the IRC
2012 Code.
BCBOA recommendation in 9/19/13 meeting:
Amend Automatic Fire Sprinkler Systems / IRC 313. All Single Family
Residents shall be exempt from the sprinkler requirements in the IRC
2012 Code.
FISCAL IMPACT: The cost of the Code Reference Books has been included in
the Building Safety Division budget. No additional significant fiscal impacts are
anticipated with adoption of the ordinance.

RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends the Building Code Board Of Appeals adopt Resolution 1,
Series 2013 recommending the Louisville City Council adopt an ordinance
adopting by reference the 2012 Edition of the International Building Code and
Associated Documents as modified by staff.
