As Bill got older he started to have health issues from all the physical labor he had done and he began to find it
increasingly difficult to find work. Before long he was homeless and desperate. The day we met Bill we were
able to find him emergency accommodation and food; we also assisted him to visit a doctor.
Over the next few weeks we assisted Bill to apply for and access public benefits including Social Security and
Medicaid; he was also evaluated and found to have an I/DD. We helped Bill find permanent housing, furniture
and clothing, health care, a part-time job and a program that traded his broken vehicle for a working vehicle.
Bill now volunteers his time to the ACL to help other people with IIDD who are homeless and trying to rebuild
their lives. He helps people move into new homes, donates household items and food, and visits people until
they settle in. Though Bill has an I/DD and is eligible for services, he will have to wait several years before he
receives any services through the I/DD system due to lack of funding. The ACL continues to be the only source
of support for Bill and the many other self - advocates also waiting for services. Bill gives as much as he receives
and his story exemplifies the ACL's mission so well because, with a little help from us, Bills gifts and
contributions to the community are realized and everyone benefit
ACL has a small and committed staff, and volunteers are used extensively; the activities in our grant proposal
strengthen the ACL's ability to carry out its mission effectively and efficiently; ACL collaborates extensively
with other nonprofits; ACL addresses community needs efficiently and cost - effectively; ACL serves low -
income and disadvantaged populations; the board and staff broadly reflect the diversity of the community
served; the organization demonstrates sound fiscal management practices; and 100% of board members
volunteer their time to the organization. Most importantly, no agency in Boulder and Broomfield Counties
provides free advocacy, support and educational opportunities to individuals with intellectual and developmental
disabilities and their families once they leave the K -12 public school system.
Thank you for the opportunity to submit this proposal. We would be honored to again partner with the City of
Louisville to enhance and enrich the lives of individuals with intellectuaUdevelopmental disabilities who reside
in Louisville. Please feel free to call if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Kate Veedcr-e4 6
President, Board of Directors
OVVP/Ca6rt
Ailsa Wonnacott
Executive Director
7
