Memorandum
To: Historical Commission
From: Bridget Bacon, Museum Coordinator
Date: January 7, 2014
Re: Museum Coordinator’s Report
The reorganization of the Historical Commission officially went into effect on January 1, 2014!
The fundraising role of the Commission will now be handled by the Louisville History
Foundation, Inc. The Commission will continue its important work as an advisory board to the
City. This restructuring is consistent with how government-owned libraries and museums in
our area (including the Louisville Public Library) tend to have an advisory board and a
separate fundraising board.
Dave Ferguson will present the Commission’s Pioneer Award to the family of Marion Junior at
rd
the annual Chamber of Commerce banquet on January 23. I put up an exhibit at the
Louisville Public Library for the month of December to display porcelain ornaments that were
made over the years by Marion Junior as a fundraiser for the Historical Commission, and as
part of the exhibit, I publicized the Pioneer Award and the Commission’s selection of Marion
to receive the award posthumously.
The Museum followed the tradition of being open before, during and after this year’s Parade
of Lights, but this year there were fewer visitors this year due to the frigid temperatures.
(Normally, the evening of the Parade of Lights and the day of the Taste of Louisville in June
are the Museum’s best attended days of the year.) Thank you to Paula Elrod, Pat Seader,
Anne Robinson, Dave Ferguson, and Marilyn Hunt for being on hand to help!
th
I made a presentation on “Unsolved Mysteries of Louisville” at the Brown Bag on Dec. 5,
with attendance of 22 people.
Boulder County has requested that I give a presentation about Louisville history to County
th
volunteers, so on Tuesday, January 28, I will give a PowerPoint presentation entitled
“Louisville and Its Coal Mining History in Old Photos” at 6 PM at the County Parks and Open
Space Headquarters, 5201 St. Vrain Rd., Longmont. The talk is open to the public.
The City of Louisville donated $780 to the Historical Commission in 2013 from the proceeds
of the Coal Creek Crossing during the Labor Day Fall Festival. This donation is now part of
the funds of the Louisville History Foundation. I plan to provide the fundraising and
membership summary for 2013 for the March meeting of the Commission.
Museum Visitors Report (these statistics represent visits to the Museum itself, and not
inquiries that come in by email or phone): November visitors: 256; December visitors: 108.
The total for 2013 came to 2,346. (December visitor numbers were lower than normal due to
the cold temperatures during the Museum Open House for the Parade of Lights.)
