Memorandum
To: Historical Commission
From: Bridget Bacon, Museum Coordinator
Date: February 25, 2014
Re: Museum Coordinator’s Report
The Winter 2014 Louisville Historian has been distributed to 850 paying and complimentary
members.
th
Two upcoming programs will tie in with the Louisville Historian’s lead article about the 100
anniversary of the Northern Coal Field war and the battle at the Hecla Mine. The first is Ron
th
Buffo’s Brown Bag on Thursday, March 6 from 12:00 to 1:00 at the Louisville Public Library,
and the other will be an April driving tour of sites relevant to the Hecla conflict. I hope that
members of the Historical Commission will be able to attend these events! (The location of
the Hecla Mine is what is now the area where King Soopers and Balfour are located in
Louisville.)
I was invited to be a guest reader for a first grade class at Fireside Elementary, and I enjoyed
speaking with the students about my job and local history.
At the request of Boulder County and for the benefit of County volunteers, I gave a
presentation entitled “Louisville and Its Coal Mining History in Old Photos” in Longmont.
The plans for an online mining map with links to information and photos is on hold pending
the implementation of the City’s GIS program, which may provide opportunities for an online
mining map for the public to access.
The Louisville History Foundation approved funding for a conservator, Lisa Capano, to clean
st
the antique safe at City Hall. Her work is expected to begin the week of April 21, with a
schedule announced in advance so that the public can watch Lisa while she works. She will
also give a scheduled talk that first week that the City will publicize.
The annual flyer/membership form to encourage people to become paying members of the
Louisville History Foundation is on schedule to be inserted with the City’s utility bills during the
billing period of March and April.
Museum Visitors Report (these statistics represent visits to the Museum itself, and not
inquiries that come in by email or phone): January visitors: 134; YTD: 134.
