CITY COUNCIL COMMUNICATION
GENDA ITEM ___
A
SUBJECT: SALES TAX REPORTS FOR THE MONTH ENDED JANUARY 31,
2014
DATE:MARCH 17, 2014
PRESENTED BY: PENNEY BOLTE, FINANCE DEPARTMENT
SUMMARY:
Attached are the monthly revenue reports for sales tax, lodging tax, auto use tax,
consumer use tax and building use tax for the month ending January 31, 2014. Also
included are monthly reports on sales tax revenue by area and by industry.
The total revenue for the taxes contained in these reports for period ending January
2014 is up 5.7% YTD over 2013.
Sales tax revenue for the month of January 2014 ended with revenue up 2.5% over
January 2013.
Sales tax revenue for the top 50 vendors increased 1% for the month of January 2014.
Gains for the month include General Merchandise (3.2%), Telecom/Utilities (10.7%),
and Hotels (7.2%). The declining sectors for January include Grocery (-5.5%), Home
Improvement (-1%), and Restaurants (-1.3%). The decline in the grocery sector is
attributable to typical timing differences in filing periods from year to year, and the small
decline for restaurants due primarily to the allowable deductions taken for utility
consumption.
Lodging tax revenue for the month of January 2014 increased 7.9% from January 2013.
Auto use tax revenue for January 2014 increased 62.6% from January 2013.
Building use tax revenue for January 2014 decreased 78% from January 2013.
Consumer use tax revenue for January 2014 increased 279% from January 2013.
Approximately $84K in consumer use tax for the month was received through audit.
CITY COUNCIL COMMUNICATION
16
