1L' Cityof
1. Louisville
Memorandum
To: Golf Course Advis Board
From: Jae Stevens
Date: June 16, 2 14
Re: Cart Path on Hole #4
Based on comments from attendees at the Coal Creek Golf Course Open House on May
16, 2014 and follow-up discussion at the Golf Course Advisory Board meeting on May
19, 2014, Kevin Norby, Golf Course Architect, re- evaluated the cart path on hole #4 and I
concur with his revised recommendation as follows:
• Several trees along the right side of the existing cart path will be removed and/or
trimmed. The cart path will be removed to widen the landing area and encourage
golfers to aim away from the houses on the left.
• Tees will be realigned which will also improve safety for homeowners.
• Rather than construction of a continuous cart path up the left side of #4, the new
shortened cart path will flare at the end of the path and will curve towards the
fairway in an effort to direct golfers using the cart path to move towards the
fairway rather than up the left side towards the houses.
• The bunker will be regraded with some mounding which will aid in directing
golfers toward the fairway rather than driving carts and balls toward the houses.
This should be a significant improvement for both safety and playability.
• Understandably, many people don't use the cart path unless there is a mandate,
from the clubhouse, to use "cart paths only" and while 100% compliance is not
anticipated, maintenance will be impacted but with improved drainage and a new
irrigation system, cost can and will be minimal. The drainage swale and culvert
extension will improve turf quality throughout hole #4 and those gains are
significant compared to potential electric golf cart impacts.
With the golf course witnessing $5.125M in improvements, including improved conditions
and drainage corrections, addressing some safety concerns and proposed tree planting,
an argument could be made that the value and marketability of several residences may
actually improve. By eliminating approximately 600 feet of cart path we are better
addressing privacy issues and project cost. This addresses most concerns and is a cost -
effective solution.
Attachment -- Hole #4 Cart Path Plan — Final
cc: Malcolm Fleming, City Manager
7
