installed PV capacity. There were also 17 grants awarded, totaling $195,600 and 287 kW of
installed PV capacity29. In this program, awardees have nine months to complete installations
after approval.
6.2.3 Materials Sector
Materials used combine to make up 19% of total GHG emissions in Louisville. The
following set of sustainability initiatives is targeted at this major emitting sector.
6.2.3.1 Low Cost Initiatives
Water Use Restrictions
Louisville already has a water conservation rebate program in place30 which offers
rebates for the purchases of energy efficient clothes washing machines and water - conserving
landscaping materials. Conducting a study of this program, including identifying barriers to
enrollment, determining overall impact, and identifying opportunities for expansion, would
provide useful insight for the improvement of this program and future design of similar
programs.
Monthly data has shown that water use in Louisville nearly quadruples in summer
months (see Figure 4) compared to winter months. This indicates that summer irrigation is a
major consumer of water in Louisville. Yearly data also shows that total annual water use
increased 11.5% from 2011 to 2012. Enacting irrigation limits and promoting wastewater reuse
for irrigation during summer months would work toward reducing overall water consumption
and reduce related GHG emissions, but may be difficult or expensive to enforce.
31
