understanding of these local dynamics will contextualize this inventory and allow for more
impactful sustainability action items to be implemented.
Building sector strategies include promotion of Xcel Demand Side Management and
EnergySmart Programs for residents and businesses, purchasing renewable energy through
Xcel's Windsource® program or installing solar PV systems, energy consumption monitoring
for residents and businesses, and developing local level grant and rebate programs for renewable
energy. These strategies will all work in conjunction with Colorado's renewable energy portfolio
which will increase statewide renewable energy generation to 30% by 2020.
Transportation sector strategies include public outreach programs to promote ridership on
RTD lines between Denver, CO and Boulder, CO, rebate programs on transit passes, community
based ride share programs, and promotion of employer -based commuter programs like Best
Workplaces for Commuters, of which there are currently zero enrolled employers in Louisville.
These programs are all voluntary and relatively low cost. The co- benefits associated with these
programs include: reduced road congestion and travel times, improved local air quality, and
fewer on -road vehicle accidents.
Materials sector actions include the evaluation of existing Water Conservation Rebate
and Drought Management programs and to identify demand -side management and public
outreach opportunities to limit water usage during summer months. Capturing the local food
market to more accurately account for emissions from food consumption could be highly
beneficial. Promotion of healthy diets which reduce red meat and dairy consumption can have a
positive impact on food related GHG emissions.
Louisville has already taken several significant steps toward becoming more sustainable.
These include several substantial solar PV installations at water and wastewater treatment
facilities, some Windsource® purchasing and PV utilization in the residential sector, and a
growing local food system. Future actions should be targeted toward the commercial building
and transportation sectors. Understanding behavioral impacts on emissions and monitoring
progress of sustainability policies is critical to the successful implementation of a sustainable
action plan.
7
